Sukumari was an Indian actress who performed in Malayalam and Tamil films. She has acted in more than 60 movies and played a variety of roles. It’s believed that she appeared in around 2000 films throughout her career. Sukumari was born in Nagercoil, Kerala, in 1940. Sukumari was the first cousin of the Travancore sisters, Lalitha, Padmini, and Ragini (their mothers were sisters). She learned to dance with her sisters and became an expert in Keralanadanam, Kathakali, and Bharathanatyam dance styles. She embarked on an all-India excursion with her siblings.
Sukumari Biography
Sukumari was discovered by a film director when she accompanied Padmini to the sets of a movie, and she made her debut in the central role in Orarivu, a Tamil picture. She was wed to Director A. Bheemsingsh until he died at the age of 30, after which she took part in several Malayalam movies from the black-and-white period, such as Chettathi, Kusruthikkuttan, Kunjali Marakkar, Thacholi Othenan, Yakshi, and Karinizhal. She became well-known in the later years when she appeared in films directed by Priyadarshan such as Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, Oodarathuammava Aalariyam, and Boeing Boeing. She was also seen in several films directed by Balachandra Menon including Manicheppu Thurannappol and Karyan Nissaram. She performed a key role in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Nizhalkkuthu (2002).

Sukumari Amma (1925-1989) was an Indian film actress who achieved fame in both Malayalam and Tamil films. She acted in more than 2,500 films during a career that spanned over five decades, including roles in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Oriya, and Bengali films. Sukumari began her career at the age of ten. She was honored with the Padma Shri by the Indian government in 2003 for her work in the arts. For her appearance in Namma Gramam, Sukumari won India’s National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. Sukumari died on 26 March 2013 in Chennai after suffering a heart attack.
