His daughter, Jagadamba, works as an HR employee. Raju’s son is employed as a Project Director at Bank of Montreal in Canada. They are both married, and Raju has grandchildren.
Raju made his screen debut in 1974 with Needa Leni Aadadi, produced by Parvathaneni Gangadhara Rao. This also the film debut for actress Prabha. The movie stayed open for 100 days and was a commercial success. Raju began to get offers from other filmmakers after the release of this picture.
Raju’s performance in B. Vittalacharya’s film Jaganmohini (1978), in which Raju plays the lead character, became a blockbuster. He subsequently starred in movies directed by Vittalacharya, such as Gandharva Kanya and Mantradandam. He also collaborated with other directors as a folklore hero in movies like Triloka Sundari (1980), directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao. Raju appeared in over 100 films during the course of two decades. He is presently active in Tamil TV Serials.
