Nagesh is a screen name used by C. Krishna Rao Gundu Rao (September 27, 1933 – January 31, 2009), was a Tamil film actor and comedian who is best remembered for his roles as a comic during the 1960s. He’s regarded as one of Tamil cinema’s most prolific comedians. Nagesh was a poor Kannada from Dharapuram, Tirupur. He received his education in Madras and worked as a ticket collector for the Indian Railways before breaking into the Tamil film industry. From 1958 until 2008, he appeared in more than 1,000 Indian movies playing numerous roles as comedian, hero, supporting actor, and villain. He died on January 31, 2009.

Despite being primarily a stand-up comic, Nagesh was recognized to be an excellent character actor by his peers. Jerry Lewis was the major influence on Nagesh’s comedy method. Similarities between Nagesh and Jerry Lewis led to the moniker “Jerry Lewis of India,” as they were both known for their comedic style and sense of humor.

From the late 1990s till his death in 2009, Nagesh acted in Tamil movies. Panchathanthiram, where he played Yuhi Sethu’s father-in-law, a memorable turn as Kamal’s father who is humiliated in Vasool Raja MBBS, and Mokkappayar in Imsai Arasan 23m Pulikesi are among his most notable works since then. His final completed part was Sheikh, the father of Kalifullah Mukthar in Dasavatharam (2008). Nagesh was a chain smoker and a heavy drinker, and his health began to deteriorate in late 2008 due to heart problems. Nagesh died on January 31, 2009, at the age of 75 after suffering from diabetes and a heart ailment while being treated at Balaji Hospital.
