When she was 12, she recorded for an English as a Second Language learning cassette for the first time.

Her mother and father would frequently pull her out of school to bring her to auditions in New York City. When she was a senior at Trumbull High School, she became interested in journalism by writing for the local newspaper The Trumbull Times, which covered high school sports. Cara graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communications in 2004. She worked for US Weekly, The Aquarian, New York Press, and Metro New York in New York before moving to Los Angeles.

While in New York, she worked as a voice actor for 4Kids Entertainment and NYAV Post, providing English voices for anime dubs. Her first anime appearance was in Magical Doremi, and her first major role was in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, where she played Alice and Yubel. In a 2012 interview, she said that she would be given lines to speak as the character based on a short description and sometimes a picture of the character.

She has voiced Teo, the co-lead to Haruka (Haru), in the anime film Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror.She also played the lead in Patema Inverted, a film about a girl who discovers a world turned upside down and where gravity causes her to fall to the ceiling of a room.
