He is the son of an Army officer and grew up in various parts of India before studying Kalaripayattu in a Kerala ashram run by his mother since he was three years old. On September 1, 2021, Vidyut Jamwal revealed his engagement with fashion designer Nandita Mahtani. In the year 2000, he was a participant in Gladrags and has been living in Mumbai ever since. He was a model in Delhi from 1996 to 2004, but after a poor modeling career, he landed his first role as a lead actor in Sakthi, an Telugu language film.

Jammwal made his Bollywood debut with the John Abraham 2011 film Force, in which he played a bad guy. He won several best-debut honors, including the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut, playing a bad guy in the movie.

Jammwal has appeared in a number of negative characters in Tamil and Telugu-language films since 2011, including Shakti (Telugu) and Oosaravelli (Telugu), both featuring NTR. In 2012, Jammwal debuted in Tamil cinema with Billa II as the antagonist opposite Ajith Kumar.In 2016, he played the antihero in Thuppakki opposite actor Vijay, which became a blockbuster.
