Thilakan, more popularly known as Thilakan was one of Malayalam cinema’s most well-known actors. He was among the few actors who were given a Padma Bhushan (India’s Highest Civilian Award) and was affectionately referred to as Perumthachan (Master Craftsman) of the Malayalam Cinema industry. He began his acting career as a thespian when he left mid-way through intermediate college to pursue this profession full-time in 1956. He performed at several sites, including the Kerala People’s Arts Club, till 1966 with a troupe of friends named Mundakayam Nataka Samithy, followed by performances at P.J. Antony’s company, Changanacherry Geetha, and radio plays for All India Radio until 1966.

Thilakan Biography

Thilakan’s film career began in the P.J Antony-directed Periyar (1973), and he subsequently performed in Gandharvakshetram and Ulkadal in 1979. In 1981, Thilakan played the lead role of Kallu Varkey in Kolangal, his first major part. He was honored with a State Award for Yavanika in 1981 for his performance as well as a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Rithubendham. For his performances as Chinnamuttathu and Gamanam, he won two more State Awards in 1994 and 1998, respectively.

The most notable achievement in his lengthy profession was, without a doubt, the film Kireedam, where he played the part of a helpless police officer who watches his kid grow into rowdy as a result of society’s influence (the son was played by Mohanlal).
