He has been married to actress Deepa Sahi, who has acted in three of his films: Maya Memsaab, Oh Darling! Yeh Hai India, and Aar Ya Paar. They then formed the Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics and Maya Digital Studios. He is the nephew of Gandhian and freedom fighter, Usha Mehta.Yatin Mehta, his younger brother is Chairman of Medanta Institute of Critical Care and Anesthesiology in Gurgaon, Haryana. Dr. Nirad Mehta, his youngest brother, is a consultant radiologist at Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai.
Mehta studied at the Film and Television Institute of India, then worked as a television producer for the Indian Space Research Organisation. He was discovered in the late 1970s, he was given almost complete autonomy over what to produce.
Mehta’s first feature film, Bhavani Bhaavi (1997), a Gujarati production that earned him acclaim. His movies have been selected for numerous international film festivals including Nantes (France) and the Moscow Film Festival where they have picked up several honors in recent years. Mirch Masala was one of Mehta’s most notable films, and it won him the Best Film Award in Hawaii. In the United States, it was released to 52 theaters. He has also had the pleasure of serving as a member of juries in several national and international film competitions.
In 1993, Mehta directed a biography of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel entitled Sardar. His most recent two films, Rang Rasiya and Manjhi the Mountain Man, both underperformed at the box office and received mostly positive reviews.
