Kalpana Ranjani born on 5 October 1965, commonly known by her mononym Kalpana, was an Indian actress who performed in South Indian films, mainly in Malayalam. Kalpana has starred in over 300 movies in several South Indian languages. For her work in Thanichalla Njan (2012), she won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress at the 60th National Film Awards. She began her career as a child actress in the late 1970s. Despite having planned on being a lead actress, she became famous among spectators for her comedic parts.

Kalpana Biography

Kalpana began her career as a child actor in the film Vidarunna Mottukal, which was released in 1991. She went on to appear in several well-received features after making her debut as a major actress in 1980’s Pokkuveyil, directed by G. Aravindan. Her Tamil bow came with 1985’s successful film Chinna Veedu, opposite K. Bhagyaraj.

She won the National Film Award for Best Actress in 1994 for her performance in Pitharajan. She also received Media Awards, as well as several Tamil Nadu State awards and other honors. In addition to Kutichenjangal, she has acted in more than thirty films since then. She made her debut with Aravindhan in 1988 but continued to work with him until his death. She then appeared opposite Vijayakanth twice again, firstly with Muthu Manikandan and later with Sathyapriya in Vikshe (1996). Her most notable movies include Sathi Leelavathi (1995) and Kaliveedu (1996). Usha Uthup collaborated with her on a music album

Kalpana was the daughter of acting parents Chavara V. P. Nair and Vijayalakshmi. Her sisters include Kalaranjini and Urvashi, both of whom work as actors. She married Anil Kumar, a Malayalam film director, in 1998, but they divorced in 2012. Before divorcing, they had one daughter named Sreemayi and one son. On 25 January 2016, while filming the film Oopiri, Kalpana went to Hyderabad. She was discovered unconscious in her hotel room and rushed to the hospital by the crew members, but died on the route of a heart attack. On 26 January 2016, a postmortem examination was conducted and she was flown home to her native village. Her burial ceremony took place on the same day.
