Djimon Hounsou is a Beninese-American actor and model and got his start appearing in music videos. He began his career in film with a small role in Without You I’m Nothing (1990). For his performance as Cinqué in Steven Spielberg’s Amistad (1997), he was awarded the Academy Honorary Award. He became well-known for his work in Gladiator (2000), In America (2003), and Blood Diamond (2006), receiving Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor nominations for both of them.

He was born on April 24, 1964, in Cotonou, Dahomey (currently Cotonou, Benin), to Albertine and Pierre Hounsou, a cook. He moved to Lyon, France, at the age of 12 with his brother Edmond. Within a year or two, he quit school and was homeless for a while. A chance encounter with a photographer led to Hounsou’s meeting with fashion designer Thierry Mugler, who encouraged him to pursue a modeling career. He began his professional career as a model in Paris in 1987. He moved to the United States in 1990.

He appeared in Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up,” “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” by Janet Jackson, and Madonna’s “Express Yourself” music videos between 1989 and 1991. He also appears in En Vogue’s video for “Hold On.”

He made his debut in the 1990 Sandra Bernhard film Without You I’m Nothing. He had a guest appearance on Alias and roles on Beverly Hills, 90210 and ER. He had a meatier part in the sci-fi movie Stargate.

In 2013, he starred in the comedy Baggage Claim with Paula Patton. He also voiced Drago Blodfist in How to Train Your Dragon 2 and played Korath the Pursuer in Guardians of the Galaxy, both in 2014. He’s appeared in two 2015 films, as a bad guy in Seventh Son and Furious 7, the seventh film in The Fast and the Furious franchise, where he played Mose Jakande, a Nigerian-French mercenary.
