He was born on February 12, 1968, in Santa Monica, California, the son of wildlife activist Jane Cameron (Agee), who was from Corpus Christi, Texas, and actor James Brolin. He was reared on a ranch in Templeton, California, and had little contact with his father’s acting career. His parents divorced when he was 16 years old.

He began his acting career in TV movies and guest appearances on TV series. Before landing a more substantial part as Brandon Walsh in the Richard Donner-directed The Goonies (1985), he was best known for playing Nicky Tubbs in Miami Vice (1984).He was offered the part of Tom Hanson in 21 Jump Street, but he and Johnny Depp were the finalists for it. The two became close and remained friends after they were considered for the part. The part eventually went to Depp. He made a guest appearance on the program in its first season.
In 2010, he played the titular role in Jonah Hex, a film based on the DC Comics character with the same name.
In April 2017, Brolin signed a four-movie deal with 20th Century Fox to star as Marvel Comics character Nathan Summers/Cable in the X-Men film franchise. 2018’s Deadpool 2 is his first appearance under that contract. He was scheduled to reprise his role in Fox’s planned X-Force film until Disney acquired 20th Century Fox. In 2021, Brolin provided the voice of an alternative Thanos in What If…?
He began stock trading in his early twenties and briefly considered quitting acting. In 2014, he stated that over a three-year period, fear and greed were all there was: “All there is fear and greed. I traded very methodically.”
