Chopra, the third of six children of Ranbir Lal and Rooprani Chopra, a Punjabi Hindu family, was born on 23 September 1935, in Lahore. After the partition of India, his family moved to Simla (present-day Shimla), where he was brought up. He has studied in S.D. Senior Secondary School, Shimla. His father desired for him to be a doctor or an Indian Administrative Services Officer. Chopra completed his schooling and college from Shimla after his father, who was a government servant, got transferred there. He graduated from Panjab University. He took part in college dramatics enthusiastically. At his father’s insistence, he completed his graduation and then went to Bombay (present-day Mumbai).

Career: One of the most iconic villains of Bollywood cinema, Prem Chopra is an Indian actor who primarily appears in Hindi films. Immortalizing the dialogue `Prem Naam Hai Mera, Prem Chopra`, the actor whose career spans over five decades, has appeared in over 300 films. Having a passion for acting, Chopra landed in Mumbai in the early 1960s only to face rejection from film studios. To make ends meet, he started working with The Times of India but continued to keep knocking on the doors of the studios. However, it was a chance encounter with a stranger in the Mumbai local train that gave him his first opportunity. The actor went on to star in the movie Chaudhary Karnail Singh, which went on to become a box-office hit and even won a National Film Award. Even though Chopra achieved success with this maiden movie, he continued working with The Times of India and it was only in 1967 that he decided to take up acting as a career.
