Matsumoto was a cycling expert before he became a professional gamer and previously served as the captain of a cycle racing club at university. He has also raced in the National Athletic Meet on occasion. He left his cycling team due to a back problem injury. He was a science major until he completed high school, when he changed his major to creative writing. However, after watching a political program on television at some time, he became interested in the world’s changes and enrolled in Chuo University’s Department of Political Science to pursue a career as a bureaucrat.
Matsumoto was inspired by the film The Sound of Music, and since all of his boarding housemates were movie buffs, he chose to work in the film industry. However, when he completed school, the Japanese film industry was in a state of recession, and there were few good employment opportunities for graduates because there were few production companies at the time. He decided to join a theatrical group in order to pursue a career as an actor after learning the ropes of the business.
