Roy was born on October 11, 1965, in Nagpur, Maharashtra, to businessman Brotin Bose Roy and Dolly Roy. He is the eldest of three boys: Rohit Roy is a television actor who grew up in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He went to school with the father of Ayush Sarkar, a 15-year-old actor.
Roy studied at Ankur School in Ahmedabad. He went on to finish his hotel management degree after he graduated from school. Roy relocated to Mumbai after finishing his education and resided with filmmaker Subhash Ghai for a while. Roy would’ve been quite happy to work in the film industry, but Subhash Ghai persuaded him not to do so because of the difficulties he’d have to face.
