Takayama is best recognized for her work in Kiki’s Delivery Service as both Kiki and Ursula, Ranma ½ as Nabiki Tendo, Moomin as Moomin, Yaiba as Yaiba Kurogane.
Takayama, from a young age, studied ballet, Japanese dance, and vocal music. Her sense of fair play was so acute as a youngster that it appeared on her report card. She wanted to become a police officer, which she felt she was suited for, and believed that ventriloquism would be important for being a traffic safety guide, so at the age of 13, she joined Himawari Theatre Group when she was in junior high school.
She decided to pursue a career in radio due on her passion for radio and interest in free chitchat and voice work when she was in high school.
Takayama left school after high school, not knowing how to be a DJ, and enrolled in Nihon Kogakuin College’s theater department to pursue her acting career. However, she became concerned about her future and quit acting altogether after graduating from Adachi Nishi High School in Tokyo. She initially worked in an office, but when a caller complimented her voice, she decided to pursue a career as a voice actor at the age of 22.
She initially auditioned for the part of the protagonist, but she was advised by various sound directors to “act more like a girl” despite her attempts to do so in a cute manner. She tried three times but failed each time, and when considering that heroine may not be ideal for her, she decided to audition for the male role.
She made her debut in 1987 in the television series Campus Special Investigator Hikaruon as a female student. She subsequently received boy parts and headlined in Mister Ajikko for the third time around as Youichi Ajiyoshi.
