She was the youngest of five children in an impoverished family in Ochira, Kerala. She was the smallest of her siblings at birth. When she was a youngster, she had a difficult childhood as she had to endure many days without food. Her father died when she was young, leaving her brother, the only boy in the family, to shoulder all of the responsibilities. She married for 16 years before calling it quits due to ill health and financial strain. She was most passionate about sports during her school years, and she spent much of her childhood in Kollam. She was a high jumper and state-level champion. However, an unforeseen injury forced her to quit school and pursue a career in athletics.
