Joy Sengupta was born on December 14, 1968, in Calcutta, West Bengal, India. He is a Bollywood film and theater actor who works in Bengali and theatrical cinemas. He is best known for his first feature, Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998), directed by Govind Nihalani.
Joy Sengupta was born and raised in Kolkata, before moving to Delhi and Nepal. He studied English Literature at Delhi University. In this era, he performed with the Jana Natya Manch theater group in Delhi. He studied drama at the Living Theater Academy in New Delhi, where he was instructed by Ebrahim Alkazi. In 1997, after working in theater, TV movies, and television series in Delhi, Sengupta was transferred to Mumbai.
