Joy Mathew – Malayalam actor, filmmaker, screenwriter, and theatre artist Jonah Mathew is one of India’s most prominent contemporary figures. Karthik made his acting debut in the 1986 Malayalam arthouse film Amma Ariyan, which has since become a classic among cineastes in Kerala. After nearly two decades away from the industry, Joy returned to Mollywood as a writer-director in 2013 with the black comedy thriller Shutter.

He is perhaps best recognized for his performance as the leading man in John Abraham’s Amma Ariyan, which was voted one of the top 10 Indian films by the British Film Institute. He made his directorial debut with Shutter, a film that depicts unusual events taking place over two days and a night in Kozhikode. The film had its Indian premiere at the 17th International Film Festival of Kerala and its foreign debut at the 9th Dubai International Film Festival. He also won the Silver Crow Pheasant Award for Best Feature Film (Audience Prize) at the 17th International Film Festival of Kerala, where he received his first award. He has written over 20 plays in Malayalam, including Athirthikkal (1989), Sankadal (1996), Pretoria – 18 October (1996 ), Chille 73 (1997). In 1995 and 1996, he was honored by the Kerala Sahitya Academy and Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Academy for two of his plays. He received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for the play Madhya Dharanazhi (1996).
