Joe Keery (Joseph David Keery) born April 24, 1992, is an American actor and musician. He is recognized for his role as Steve Harrington in the Netflix science-fiction horror series Stranger Things. He has previously performed on a number of albums and EPs for other bands, including April’s Fool (2011), Tides of Manuskauitn (2007), and The Recall (2006). He is also a member of the band Post Animal.

Keery was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, to parents David and Nina Keery, an architect and Professor of English, respectively. He is the second of five children and grew up with sisters Caroline, Lizzy, Kate, and Emma.
Keery was born and reared in Newburyport, Massachusetts, where he went to River Valley Charter School, a local Montessori primary and middle school, and Newburyport High School. He began performing in high school, but only because his sister pushed him to. He started out doing theater in the open, a summer performing arts camp at Maudslay State Park, but eventually turned to act when he was younger.

- Keery then attended The Theatre School at DePaul University, where he obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting in 2014.
- After graduating from DePaul, Keery went on over a hundred auditions. Before his breakout part in Stranger Things, Keery appeared in a KFC, Domino’s, and amiibo commercial, as well as roles on Empire and Chicago Fire. His first full-length film role was in Stephen Cone’s independent, Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party.
- In late 2015, Keery was cast in Netflix’s Stranger Things. He initially tried out for the part of Jonathan, but later submitted a tape for Steve, his character. The first season of the program was made available on Netflix on July 15, 2016. From recurring cast to series regular for the second season of Stranger Things, which aired October 27, 2017. Keery returned for the third season, released on July 4, 2019.
