Her father was a lawyer but never worked and squandered most of the family’s wealth.
After her father’s death, her mother returned to her father’s home with her in Bangalore.
In her childhood, she was under the care of her mother’s sister Padmavalli and maternal grandparents because her mother moved to Madras for work.
She was fluent in many languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, Malayalam, and English.
She was fond of pet dogs but when her pet died she discontinued keeping pet dogs at her home.
In 1960, she gave her debut dance performance at the Rasika Ranjani Sabha.
