Rabindranath Tagore – He is a world-famous poet, litterateur, philosopher and Nobel laureate of Indian literature. He is also known as Gurudev. He was a visionary of the Indian cultural consciousness through Bengali literature. He is Asia’s first Nobel Prize winner. He is the only poet whose two compositions became the national anthems of two countries – ‘Jana Gana Mana’, the national anthem of India and ‘Amar Sonar Bangla’, the national anthem of Bangladesh.
Rabindranath Tagore Biography
Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861 in Jorasanko Thakurbari, Kolkata. His father was Devendranath Tagore and his mother was Sharda Devi. He had his early education at the prestigious St. Xavier’s School. In the desire to become a barrister, he enrolled at the Public School in Bridgeton, England in 1878, then studied law at the University of London, but returned home in 1880 without obtaining a degree. He married Mrinalini Devi in 1883. Tagore’s mother died in his childhood and his father was a widely travelled man, so he was raised mostly by servants. The Tagore family was a pioneer during the Bengal Renaissance. They published literary magazines; Bengali and Western classical music and theatre and screenplays were regularly performed there. Tagore’s father allowed many professional dhrupad musicians to stay at home and taught Indian classical music to the children was invited to teach.
Then he moved to Amritsar Punjab, during his one-month stay in Amritsar in 1873, he was greatly influenced by the Good Morning Guruvani and Nanak Vani, which were sung at the Golden Temple to which both father and son were regular visitors. He mentioned it in his book Meri Yamand which was published in 1912.
