Thara Kalyan is an incredibly talented Indian Classical Arts dancer and actor in Malayalam television and films. She has also studied professionally as a dancer in Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam, and Kuchipudi. Thara has established a reputation for herself not only as an actress, but also as a TV anchor/host for several programs on Doordarshan, and has judged the popular program Patturumal on Kairali TV. She made her debut in films with the Tamil film Amme Bhagavathi (1986), followed by Sukhamano Devi, Marikkunnilla Njan, Parankimala, and others. She played a small role in the 1986 Malayalam film Amme Bhagavathi, directed by Venu Nagavally and starring Mohanlal, Shankar, Geetha, and Urvashi. Her most recent release was Angels, a “social thriller” by debuting director Jean Markose, which focuses on Asha Sarath’s case among other things.

Thara has acted in a number of Tamil television series, including My Dear Kuttichathan (Asianet), Vrindavanam, Megham, Padasaram (all on Asianet), Bhagyadevatha and Aayirathil Oruval (on Mazhavil Manorama), Indraneelam & Aalippazham (on Surya TV), and others. Thara Kalyan, aka Dr. Thara, has been trained in Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam, and Kuchipudi for more than 10 years under the renowned dance teachers Sri Rajarathinam Master and Sri Vinayachandran. At a young age, she began performing for Onam celebrations in her neighborhood to her mother’s music. She credits her discipline and attitude to dance, which she refers to as a way of life almost impossible to live without. Her husband Rajaram was also a supporting actor who appeared in minor roles on television serials and was a city local TV channel program editor and stage show, choreographer. He passed away in 2017. Thara is also an anchor for Kairali TV, where she has judged the current hit reality series Patturumal. She has competed in beauty pageants and won the title Ms. Trivandrum in 1983.
