Saranya Ponvannan – Saranya Ponvannan also known by her birth name Sheela Christina was born on 26 April 1970. She is a Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam actress who has appeared in films primarily in that language. Saranya made her feature film debut in Mani Ratnam’s Nayakan (1987), and she has since starred as a lead actress from 1987 to 1996. She took an eight-year hiatus from acting before returning to films in 2003 as a character actor, specializing in “mother of the hero” parts.
Saranya Ponvannan Biography
Saranya began her career as a producer but later switched to acting. She is the daughter of Malayalam film director A. B. Raj, who has directed over 75 movies in his career. In 1995, she married actor-director Ponvannan and the couple has two daughters. She made her Tamil film debut in Mani Ratnam’s Nayakan, playing the female lead opposite Kamal Haasan. She made her Telugu debut in the year 1988 with Neerajanam, and then a year later she took on the lead role in Artham, a Malayalam film opposite Mamooty. In 1996, shortly before the end of her career as a lead actress, she made her debut in Kannada cinema with Appaji.

After her marriage in 1995, she quit acting. She returned to the screen in 2000, starring as a lead character in the comedy series Veettukku Veedu Lootty and subsequently appearing in other films as a supporting role. In 2006, she had a recurring role in the family drama series Mugangal, which aired on Sun TV. After a long absence, she resurfaced in the 2003 Tamil film Alai alongside Raghuvaran as Silambarasan’s mother.
Since then she has been known for her “mother” parts in movies, notably Raam, Thavamai Thavamirundhu, and Em Magan in the mid-2000s. She established Design & School of Fashion Technology in 2014, a fashion institute in Virugamakkam, Chennai. Her first appearance was in 2021 when she played the title role of Bhoomi alongside Jayam Ravi. Critics stated that the talented actress was limited to a few minor parts.
