Sandy Powell is a British Costume Designer. She has won three Academy Awards for Best Costume Design for her works in Young Victoria, The Aviator and Shakespeare In Love along with 12 nominations for the same. She has also received 13 BAFTA Award nominations, a win for Velvet Goldmine and The Young Victoria. The latter film garnered her several other awards in costume design. Powell left Central School of Art in London, before completing her degree, due to offers of work from, amongst others. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2011 New Year Honours for services to the film industry.

Sandy Powell Biography

Powell was born on 07 April 1960 in London, and grew up in Brixton and Clapham.Her father worked in casinos, while her mother was a secretary. Powell learned to sew from her mother on a Singer sewing machine, drew pictures of clothes, designed and made outfits for her dolls, and started making her own clothes from a young age. She also developed an interest in film and theatre from an early age. Powell attended Sydenham High School, and in 1978 she completed an art foundation course at Saint Martin’s School of Art, where she became acquainted with Lea Anderson, who later became a dancer and choreographer as well as Powell’s collaborator. In 1979, Powell began a BA in theatre design at the Central School of Art and Design, but left after two years before completing her degree and started working for fringe theatre companies.

Career: Eventually Mrs. Powell started to make her own clothes. She studied at Central Saint Martin’s (now a part of the Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design) for a theatre design degree, but costume was where her heart was. During the summer, after her second year, she saw dance classes with Lindsay Kemp (British choreographer) advertised and went along. The class didn’t go very well but she introduced herself to Mr. Kemp, had tea with him, showed him some of her designs and the two became friends. She started to work in the theatre world and decided not to return to Central. Sandy Powell ones remarked that studying can work for some people, but that it wasn’t right for her.
