Starting in the late 1990s, Sai Kumar’s golden era began. He was chosen to play the important buddy of hero Shaji Kailas’ Aaraam Thampuran, which made him a star in Kerala. Then he became an unrivaled commodity in Bollywood films. He played the bad guy to Mohanlal in Narasimham (2000), Thandavam (2001), and Chathurangam (2001). His star was apparent from the large posters for Thandavam, where his photos were printed to the same scale as Mohanlal’s. He played a villain in films like Valliettan and Vesham, which he did with Mammootty. In 2002, he played a nasty Goonda called Keeri Vasu in the Dileep film Kunjikkoonan (2002), which was well-received.
