The kidnapping was orchestrated by kidnapping gangs from Mainland China, who are often involved in human trafficking . The Chinese government does not consider the kidnapping gangs (often working in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau) to be a major problem. These gangs kidnap mainly mainland Chinese people who are studying overseas or come to Hong Kong for business purposes . The victims are then often held captive in Thailand or Malaysia while ransom demands are made. Ming-Lo’s cousin was kidnapped in Malaysia. The kidnappers had demanded US$1 million (¥2,100,000; HK$11,300,000). Ming-Lo stated he knew it was easy for him to get cash quickly through his contacts in the entertainment industry if needed .
