Kunchacko and Shalini reunited in 1998 for Nakshatratharattu, which became a blockbuster success. The latter earned him one of the most successful Malayalam films of the year. He had established a “romantic hero” reputation in Malayalam cinema, but he also had success in other genres, as a villager in Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka (2001) and as a son to a financially strapped family in Kasthooriman (2003). Kunchacko won the Kerala State Film Award – Special Mention for his work in Ee Snehatheerathu in 2004. After a few commercial failures during the mid-2000s, he suffered a setback in his career. In 2006, he took a break from acting and switched to business.
In 2016, Kunchacko Boban resurrected Udaya Studios, releasing the comedy-drama film Kochavva Paulo Ayyappa Coelho through the studio. He is a member of the Udaya family, which is considered the cinematic roots of Kerala. On the occasion of his Silver Jubilee and Platinum Jubilee celebrations as hero and producer, Kunchacko Boban announced ‘Ariyippu,’ under Udaya Studios’ banner.
