He earned his bachelor’s degree in theatre/speech from Northwestern University in 1997. Atkins was initiated as a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity (Theta Chapter) at Northwestern University in 1996.In 1998, he attended the Los Angeles Performing Arts Conservatory (formerly PDAC), studying under its founder and former director Pat Fleury.
He became well-known for his portrayal of Dr. Michael Gallant, a character who debuted in the eighth season (2001) of the NBC medical drama ER. He left ER after the 2003-2004 season. In 2004, he was cast in the short-lived police drama Hawaii, where he played former Chicago Police Department Det. John Declan, who moved to an elite crime unit of the Honolulu Police Department. He continued to appear on ER in 2004 and 2005, as his character was on leave from service in Iraq as a US Army doctor. At the conclusion of the 2005-06 season, his character was murdered in Iraq. Atkins has played the recurring character Gary Navarro on The 4400, a sci-fi series about a group of people who believe they are time travelers. Navarro is a telepath.
From 2009 to 2014, Atkins acted as Special Agent Clinton Jones in USA Network’s White Collar.
He has appeared as Assistant US Attorney Rivers in the CBS drama The Good Wife. In 2009, he starred in season 4, episode 25 of Criminal Minds – “To Hell…” as Sgt. William Hightower. Atkins has also made appearances on season 8 of CSI: Miami.
In 2014, he was a Nova Corps pilot in Guardians of the Galaxy.
