Ranjini (Sasha Selvaraj), a Singapore-born Indian actress who rose to popularity in the Malayalam and Tamil films of the mid-1980s and early 1990s, is one of them. Selvaraj made her debut in P Bharathiraja’s 1985 Tamil film Muthal Mariyathai. She played Swathi Thirunal, a biopic on Travancore ruler Lenin Rajendran, in 1987. Her second Malayalam film, Chithram (1988), written and directed by Priyadarshan, became a huge box-office success. In Malayalam cinema, Mohanlal-Ranjini was known as a golden duo since all of their films were commercial successes. Koothara, directed by Srinath Rajendran, will be her return to acting after a 20-year absence.

Ranjini was born as Sasha Selvaraj to Selvaraj and Lilly Selvaraj, who were from Tirunelveli. She was first exposed to cinema by P Bharathiraja, a friend of her father’s. For his 1985 film Muthal Mariyathai, Bharathiraja gave her the stage name “Ranjini.” Ranjini was a Singaporean whose family had gone to visit her. She’d traveled down to Chennai on vacation from school in order to ensure that the production would wrap up in two weeks.

Ranjini made her debut in the film industry with Swathi Thirunal, which was directed by Lenin Rajendran. The movie was a major success. She subsequently acted in Malayalam movies such as Chithram, Mukunthetta Sumitra Vilikkunnu (1988), and Kottayam Kunjachan (1990).

Ranjini packed up her bags and left the film industry in 1994, when she was at the height of her career, to pursue a master’s degree and spend more time with her family in Singapore. Her last movie was Customs Diary (1993), directed by TS Suresh Babu. She studied business administration at London University and subsequently received a law degree. She also worked for BBC for a brief period. She is a graduate lawyer who is now working as a joint director at an overseas education institution in Kochi, Kerala. She married Malayali entrepreneur Pierre Kombara in 2006.
