Prasad was born on July 19, 1956, to Gadde Venkata Narayana and Manikyamba in Nimmakuru, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh. His father was a schoolteacher. Prasad earned a bachelor’s degree in Ceramic Engineering before entering the film business. Prasad is married to Vijaya Chamundeswari and has a son and a daughter.

He began working for a firm, but was forced to leave after being found too young. After seeing the film’s production, he decided to pursue an acting career and accepted N.T.R.’s and N. Trivikrama Rao’s advise to enroll in an acting school.
Prasad made his debut as an actor on the screen with Bapu’s Sneham (1977), for which he served as a voice-over artist. He first worked as a voice actor and played many supporting parts. He had a minor part in the feature film Ramarajyamlo Bheemaraju, which introduced him to 14 films.
He was discovered by director Vamsy to star in his film, Preminchu Pelladu. He became famous after starring in Vamsy’s Ladies Tailor. He also starred in lead parts throughout his career. He worked in more than 200 Telugu movies and a few Tamil ones during his lengthy 35 years career. Prasad is known as the “King of Comedy” and the “Ntakireeti” of Andhra Pradesh in South India.
As a supporting artist, he has appeared in the following films: Aagadu, S/O Satyamurthy, Srimanthudu, and Nannaku Prematho as well as elderly characters in Dagudumoota Dandakore.
Rajendra Gadde Prasad currently has supporting parts in films produced by his own company, G R Productions. He has also established a film studio in Vijayawada called Sunkara Ramabrahmam Chitram.
He was honored with the Andhra Pradesh State Nandi Award for his role in “Golconda Abbulu,” which was recognized as the best comedy performance in the state. He is one of the finest Telugu comedians to have emerged on screen. Gadde Rajendra Prasad was given the “Special Jury Award” for his outstanding performance in Nannaku Prematho at SIIMA Awards 2016. In 2018, he was given the Padma Shri award.
