He is the grandson of K L Narayana Murthy, a renowned filmmaker who directed movies such as Mayaabazar and Shri Krishna Satya. Chandravathi is his mother, and Subbareddy is his father. He has a younger brother named Harshavardhan Reddy, as well as a younger sister named Haripriya Ambati. He has received training in Kathak at Delhi Gopi Chand Naath School, learning under Guru Rajendra Kumar Mishra. Before he became a full-time actor, he spent two years working as a software developer in the IT sector.

Arjun is married to Surekha Ambati in 2006. They have a son named Ritwik Arjun Ambati, who was born on 3 January 2018.
Ambati entered into the film field as a child artist for the movie ‘Palnati Pourusham’ in 1990 at age 4. He is known as Arjun Yajath. His first acting role was as Sumanth’s friend in the movie ‘Sri Ramadasu’. He also acted in a Malayalam Film ‘Jathakam’. He also acted in the movie ‘Bheemli’ (2005), in which he played Lord Krishna.
Arjun is known for his role as Male and Female in the movie Ardhanaari which was released on 20 March 2015. He played both male and female roles without any change of costume by applying prosthetic makeup. For his performance, he has received a National Film Award for Best Actor on 28 April 2016. The movie has been remade into other languages including Hindi, Malayalam and Telugu.
He is currently playing the lead role in the Star Maa TV series “Devatha,” which has been airing since March 28.
Arjun has received the best actor award at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha in 2015 for his role as a man and a woman in the movie ‘ARDHANAARI’. He also won the National Film Award for Best Actor. In 2016, he won Cinema Express Awards Telugu for Best Actor – Male for Ardhanaari.
