Lal Bahadur Shastri – He was the second Prime Minister of India. He was the Prime Minister of India for almost eighteen months from 9 June 1964 until his death on 11 January 1966. He received the title of Shastri from Kashi Vidyapeeth. He was made the Prime Minister of the country in 1964 due to his clean image after Jawaharlal Nehru died on May 27, 1964, during his tenure as Prime Minister. He assumed the office of Prime Minister of India on 9 June 1964. After the independence of India, he was appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary of Uttar Pradesh. In the cabinet of Govind Ballabh Pant, he was entrusted with the Ministry of Police and Transport. During the tenure of the Transport Minister, he had appointed women conductors for the first time. After becoming the police minister, he started using water cannons instead of sticks to keep the crowd under control. In 1951, he was appointed General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru. In the elections of 1952, 1957 and 1962, he worked very hard to win the Congress party with a huge majority.
Lal Bahadur Shastri Biography
He was born in 1904 in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh in a Kayastha family to Munshi Sharda Prasad Srivastava. His father was a primary school teacher, his mother’s name was Ramdulari. Being the youngest in the family, his parents called him Nanhen. Unfortunately, his father passed away when he was eighteen months old only. His mother Ramdulari went to his father Hazarilal’s house in Mirzapur. After some time his maternal grandfather also died. His maternal uncle Raghunath Prasad helped his mother a lot in raising a child without a father. While living in his maternal grandfather’s house, he took primary education. After that education took place at Harishchandra High School and Kashi Vidyapeeth. After getting the title of Shastri from Kashi Vidyapeeth, he removed the caste word Srivastava forever and put ‘Shastri’ in front of his name. In 1928, he was married to Lalita daughter of Ganesh Prasad, a resident of Mirzapur. They had six children, two daughters – Kusum and Suman and four sons – Harikrishna, Anil, Sunil and Ashok.
Political Life of Lal Bahadur Shastri
After completing his graduation in the Sanskrit language, he joined the Bharat Sevak Sangh and started his political career from here, he decided, he was service to the country. He was a true Gandhian who spent his whole life in simplicity and devoted it to the service of the poor. He was an active participant in all the important programs and movements of the Indian freedom struggle and as a result, he had to stay in jails many times. Seeing England being badly entangled in the Second World War, as soon as Netaji gave the slogan of “Delhi Chalo” to the Azad Hind Fauj, Gandhi Ji, sensing the urgency of the occasion, on the night of 8 August 1942, “Quit India” from Bombay to the British. and issued a “do or die” order to the Indians. On 9 August 1942, he reached Allahabad and cleverly raised the Gandhian slogan of this movement, “Don’t die, kill!”. He was arrested on 19 August 1942 after running this movement while remaining underground for eleven days.
Apart from Purushottamdas Tandon and Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, his political mentors included Jawaharlal Nehru. After first coming to Allahabad in 1929, he started working with Tandonji as the secretary of the Allahabad unit of Bharat Sevak Sangh. It was while in Allahabad that his closeness with Nehru grew. After this, his stature continued to grow and climbing the ladder of success one after the other, he reached the main post of Home Minister in Nehru’s cabinet. And not only this, after the death of Nehru, he also became the Prime Minister of India.
