Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar – He was an Indian educator and social reformer of the nineteenth century & He is also known as the “father of Bengali prose” because his essay efforts and Develop Bengali prose was remarkable. He was the main activist for Hindu widow remarriage, petitioning the Legislative council despite severe opposition. The widow remarriage was considered a flagrant breach of Hindu customs and was staunchly opposed, Lord Dalhousie personally finalised the bill and the Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act, 1856 was passed. He is intelligent in studies & he did graduation in Sanskrit and philosophy that Sanskrit College in Calcutta, where he was in college he got the honourable title “Vidyasagar” which mean “Ocean of Knowledge”.

Ishwar Chandra Bandyopadhyay was born on 26 September 1820 in Birsingha village in Paschim Medinipur District West Bengal in a Bengali Hindu Brahmin family. His father name was Thakurdas Bandyopadhyay & mother name was Bhagavati Devi. His father was lived in Calcutta (Kolkata), in the age of 9 he also shifted to Kolkata with his father for completing his studies. He used to study under a street light as it was not possible for him to afford a gas lamp at home & he qualified all the examinations with excellence and get quick success. He was rewarded with scholarships for his academic performance. He did a part-time job teaching at Jorashanko to support his family. After twelve long years, he passed out of the college in 1841 & qualified in Sanskrit Grammar, Literature, Dialectics, Vedanta, Smriti and Astronomy. At the age of fourteen, he got married to Dinamayee Devi, she gives birth to a baby boy whos named Narayan Chandra Bandyopadhyaya. In 1841 he becomes the head of the Sanskrit department in Fort William College, he changes the college after five years & joined the Sanskrit College as Assistant Secretary. He recommended several changes in the existing education system in the first year of service, these changes triggered a serious debate between Ishwar Chandra and college secretary Rasmoy Dutta. He resigned from the Sanskrit College and rejoined the Fort William College as head clerk in 1849 against the advice of Rasomoy Dutta.
