In 1989, after moving to St. Louis, Gunn formed a band, The Icons, as the lead vocalist. In 1994, the band released its debut album, Mom, We Like It Here on Earth. Their tracks “Sunday” and “Walking Naked” were used in the film Tromeo and Juliet. The Icons split up in the mid-1990s. Gunn has gone on to score music for Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, and Movie 43.
In 1995, Gunn began his career in the film industry with Troma Entertainment, where he wrote and directed the independent feature The Tromeo and Juliet. The founder of Troma, Lloyd Kaufman, taught him how to write screenplays, produce films, scour locations for suitable settings, direct actors, distribute films, and create his own poster art.
