Seán William McLoughlin better known as Jacksepticeye was born on February 7, 1990, in County Offaly, Ireland, the youngest of five children to John (c. 1936 – 27 January 2021) and Florrie McLoughlin. During his youth, he was called “Jack Septic Eye” after injuring his eye during a football game. He studied music technology and production at Limerick Institute of Technology before leaving and returning to his native country. He has worked in events that have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity.

During this time, he was the drummer for a melodic death metal-influenced metalcore band called Raised to the Ground, which released one EP titled Risen from the Ashes in 2009. He moved to Athlone, County Westmeath, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in hotel management at Athlone Institute of Technology. Jacksepticeye became an internet phenomenon in April 2015, when he started uploading videos under the name “jacksepticeye” to YouTube. He started off doing voice imitations before progressing to gameplay production. In just four days, he gained 15,000 subscribers after being mentioned in a PewDiePie video in 2013. McLoughlin was able to make it his full-time profession by May 2014 as a result of his channel’s success.
In July 2015, the channel had 1 billion views and 3.2 million subscribers. He was one of the original YouTubers under PewDiePie’s multi-channel network, Revelmode, in January 2016. He co-hosted SXSW Gaming Awards with fellow YouTuber Pewdiepie in 2017.
