She began her career as a ballerina and trained as one until deciding to pursue acting instead. She was an English and drama student at Huntingtower School in Melbourne’s east, where she graduated with two flawless study scores in Drama and English. She was the school’s dux when she graduated in 2007. In 2010, she received a bachelor’s degree in drama from the Victorian College of the Arts. She was given a Richard Pratt Bursary in 2009 for outstanding acting students in their second year of training.
In the 2011 Australian comedy-drama film A Few Best Men, her first extended appearance was as a secretary. This was her first acting job since she had just graduated from drama school. Director Baz Luhrmann, who was casting for his upcoming film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, flew her to auditions in Los Angeles, where she screen tested with actor Tobey Maguire after seeing her audition reel.
Debicki appeared as Madame in the Sydney Theatre Company’s staging of Jean Genet’s play The Maids with Cate Blanchett and Isabelle Huppert playing Claire and Solange, respectively, from June to July 2013. In 2017, she was named Best Newcomer at the Sydney Theatre Awards for her acting. The play moved to off-Broadway in New York City Center in 2014. At the same time, Debicki appeared in a 13-minute short film called “Gödel Incomplete.”
After the success of The Night Manager, Debicki was cast in a minor role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as Ayesha, leader of the Sovereign people.
