Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek (1940–2020) was a Canadian-American game show host and television personality. From its rebirth in 1984 until his death in 2020, he hosted the syndicated general knowledge quiz show Jeopardy! for 37 seasons. In addition to Jeopardy, Trebek has hosted a number of other game shows, including The Wizard of Odds, Double Dare, High Rollers, Battlestars, Classic Concentration, and To Tell the Truth. He’s also appeared in several movies and television series as himself.

Trebek was born in Canada and became a naturalized US citizen in 1998. For his work on Jeopardy!, Trebek has won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show Host eight times, winning it four times consecutively from 1997 to 2002. He died on November 8, 2020, at the age of 80 after a 20-month battle with stage IV pancreatic cancer. He had signed a contract to host Jeopardy! until 2022.

- Trebek was born on July 22, 1940, in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada to George Edward Trebek (born Terebeychuk), a chef who had arrived from Ukraine as a youngster, and Lucille Marie Lagacé (née April 14, 1921). Mr. Trebek’s family has roots in Renfrew County, Ontario. His maternal grandmother was born in Mount St. Patrick near Renfrew, and his mother grew up there before moving to Canada as a child.
- Trebek’s parents raised him in a bilingual home. Trebek was almost expelled from the boarding school his parents sent him to. Trebek failed out of military college shortly after enrolling, when he was instructed to cut his hair. At the age of 13, Trebek started work as a bellboy at his father’s hotel while he was a chef there. Trebek went to Sudbury High School (now Sudbury Secondary School) and then studied at the University of Ottawa.
- Trebek studied philosophy at the University of Ottawa. He was a member of the English Debating Society while attending university. He wanted to work in broadcasting then, and he tried out for CTV’s morning television show “Canada AM.” In 1961, Trebek graduated from the University of Ottawa with a degree in
