Taika Waititi /ˈtaɪkə waɪˈtit/ (born 16 August 1975), better known by his stage name Taika Waititi, is a New Zealand film director, actor, and comedian. He has won two Primetime Emmy Awards, a BAFTA Award, an Academy Award, and a Grammy Award. His top-grossing New Zealand film is Boy (2010), which he also wrote. He has received four BAFTA nominations and one Academy Award nomination.

Two Cars, One Night, directed by Taika Waititi in 2003, earned him a nomination for Best Live Action Short Film at the Academy Awards. He was part of the writing, directing, and performing team for What We Do in the Shadows (2014), which was subsequently adapted into a television series of the same name (2019–present). The show has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.

He has directed the superhero film Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and the black comedy Jojo Rabbit (2019), the latter of which he also wrote and starred as an exaggerated Adolf Hitler. Waititi’s next film, Jojo Rabbit, was nominated for six Academy Awards and won in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay.
He also received a Grammy nomination for his work on the score. In addition to directing an episode of the television series “The Mandalorian” (2019-present), he also voices the character IG-11, for which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance.
Taika David Cohen was born in Raukokore, the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand’s North Island, and grew up in both Wellington and the East Coast. His father was a Te Whanau-Apanui artist, but his mother, Robin Cohen, is a schoolteacher.
The Waititi name has been associated with James Mason since the 1940s. His mother’s side was “Russian Jews mixed with a bit of Irish,” while his father was “Māori and a little bit of French Canadian.”
