He was the first of ten children born to Neelakandan Namboothiri and Saraswathi in Mannakkanad, near Kuravilangad, in Kottayam. Padinjare Mana is his bloodline. He officiates at Chirayil Ganapathi Temple and has seven brothers and two sisters. He obtained a BSc degree and went on to study for a Master’s in Science at SRM College Rewa in Madhya Pradesh, where he now works as an administrator. His first film was Yaagam in 1982. He was formerly the chemistry professor of Deva Matha College, Kuravilangad, where he is still employed. He is married to Kumari Antharjanam and has three daughters.
